NXP i.MX Memory Compatibility Guide

Check memory interface support across i.MX8M, i.MX8ULP, i.MX91, i.MX93 and i.MX95, then qualify the exact device on your board.

Can i.MX 8M Plus use LPDDR4X-only memory?

No. An LPDDR4X-only device is not a substitute for the LPDDR4 interface on i.MX 8M Plus. A dual-mode device must support the required LPDDR4 electrical mode, organization and timings, and pass validation on the target board.

i.MX8M Plus: LPDDR4 is the key check

Do not approve an LPDDR4X-only part because the package, capacity or headline speed matches. A candidate must support the operating mode and voltage required by the i.MX8M Plus design. A device supporting both LPDDR4 and LPDDR4X still needs a full datasheet and board-level review.

For DDR4 and LPDDR4, compare density, addressing, ranks, bus organization, package ballout, timing and refresh requirements. Follow the NXP hardware design guide for the board, power rails and routing.

Validation evidence to keep

  1. Record the NXP guide revision, processor revision, full memory PN and datasheet revision.
  2. Generate the DDR configuration with the applicable NXP tool and supported BSP workflow.
  3. Keep training logs and test sustained mixed workloads at the intended data rate.
  4. Test temperature and voltage corners, repeated cold starts, warm resets, suspend/resume and power cycling.
  5. Approve the tested board, software and part revision together. Reassess changes through PCN control.

No supplier part is described here as NXP certified. Compatibility requires official support evidence and validation on the target design. See second-source qualification before substituting a device.

Common question

Can an LPDDR4X-only part replace LPDDR4 on i.MX8M Plus?

Do not assume compatibility. The candidate must support the LPDDR4 mode and electrical requirements of the design, followed by validation on the target board.
